New England Colonies-Puritans
~FAST FACTS~ The first English colony was Jamestown in 1607. The Puritans (religious dissidents) soon followed in 1619-1622. They were sailing for Virginia, but landed in Massachusetts. The Puritans believed that the Church of England was too close to Catholicism. They believed in a pure form of Protestantism.

They came mostly as family groups and were united by religious purpose (3/4 came for that reason). Compared to the Chesapeake colony, there was less of a sexual imbalance (male to female ratio).

Congregationalism=Puritans created well organized communities and churches. As they grew, new congregations “hived off” into new communities. The Puritans came closest to the English ideal as rules were more strictly enforced in New England.
